Activity 2
Micro Learning Activity for Teachers: Reflecting on Lessons Through Pupil Voice
Objective:
To encourage teachers to reflect on their teaching practices by incorporating feedback from pupils about their experiences of learning and teaching.
Activity: Pupil Voice Reflection for Enhancing Learning and Teaching
Step 1: Setting the Stage (5 minutes)
- Begin by considering your most recent lessons. Reflect briefly on how you planned for:
- Engaging pupils in meaningful learning experiences.
- Providing varied and inclusive learning opportunities.
- Encouraging pupils to take ownership of their learning.
Step 2: Pupil Voice Health Check (10 minutes)
Use the following questions to gather feedback from a small group of pupils. You can do this informally through conversations, or by using this quick survey (Please use the 'Duplicate it' button to copy the form so the results come back to you). Reflect on their responses afterward.
Learning, Teaching and Assessment Health Check
- Learning Opportunities:
- "Are lessons focused on developing your skills across the curriculum, such as Literacy, Numeracy, and Health & Wellbeing?"
- "Do you feel encouraged to take responsibility for your learning and make choices about your aims?"
- Lesson Variety and Challenge:
- "Are lessons challenging and varied? What types of activities have you found most engaging?"
- Resources:
- "Do the resources used in class support your learning effectively? Are digital tools utilized well?"
- Feedback and Conversations:
- "Do you engage in meaningful conversations with your teachers about your progress?"
- "How effective is the feedback you receive in helping you move forward?"
- Learning Intentions and Success Criteria:
- "Have teachers shared clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria with you this week? How often?"
- Skills Development:
- "Can you describe the skills you are developing through your learning? How do these apply across subjects?"
Step 3: Teacher Reflection (15 minutes)
Based on the feedback collected, reflect on your teaching practices using the following prompts:
- Inclusion and Personalisation:
- Are you offering opportunities for pupils to learn in ways that suit their needs, or is learning delivered uniformly?
- How often do you incorporate pupil input into planning lessons?
- Engagement and Variety:
- What strategies are you using to ensure lessons are challenging, varied, and engaging?
- Are you employing active learning techniques, such as group work or hands-on activities?
- Use of Resources:
- Are the classroom resources, including digital tools, sufficient and well-integrated into lessons?
- What steps can you take to enhance resource availability or usage?
- Feedback and Communication:
- Is your feedback actionable and aligned with pupils' next steps in learning?
- How can you enhance learning conversations to make progress more transparent to pupils and their parents/carers?
- Skills Development Across the Curriculum:
- Are lessons clearly linked to developing core skills like Literacy, Numeracy, and Health & Wellbeing?
- How are these skills communicated and reinforced across the curriculum?
Step 4: Action Planning (5 minutes)
- Identify one area where pupil feedback suggests improvement is needed.
- Outline a specific change or strategy you will implement in your teaching practice next week to address this area.
- Share your plan with a peer or leader for accountability and support.
Follow-Up:
- Revisit this process regularly to track improvements and gather further pupil input.
- Encourage colleagues to engage in similar reflective practices and share insights during team meetings.
